Alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power were used by 171,505 households (1.3%) in 2011. At the provincial level, households in Prince Edward Island had the largest increase in energy consumption, using an average of 19 GJ more per household in 2011 than in 2007; an increase of 15%. Prince Edward Island and Alberta had the highest average household energy consumption for 2011. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, natural gas was used primarily for street and building lighting, providing what was known as gaslight. Today, improved distribution of gas has made possible a wide variety of uses in homes, businesses, factories, and power plants.

Single-cycle gas turbines generally convert the heat energy from combustion into electricity at efficiencies of 35 to 40 percent. Higher efficiencies of 50 percent or more are possible in natural gas “combined-cycle” plants. NGCC plants first use the combustion gases to drive a gas turbine, after which the hot exhaust from the gas turbine is used to boil water into steam and drive a steam turbine. Propane and heating oil — again, mostly confined to the Northeast — only provide 10 percent of residential heat in the country, but they produce 20 percent of its emissions. So they are low-hanging fruit for policymakers, who can target them through incentive programs, through education programs via utilities, or through special provisions in renewable energy mandates.
The survey data show that heating oil equipment is older than average but more likely to be regularly maintained than other types of heating equipment, providing some potential efficiency benefits. The transportation sector uses natural gas as a fuel to operate compressors that move natural gas through pipelines and as a vehicle fuel in the form of compressed natural gas and liquefied natural gas. Nearly all vehicles that use natural gas as a fuel are in government and private vehicle fleets. In 2021, the transportation sector accounted for about 4% of total U.S. natural gas consumption.

Between December 2019 and May 2021, researchers collected over 200 unburned natural gas samples from 69 unique kitchen stoves and building pipelines across Greater Boston. From these samples, researchers detected 296 unique chemical compounds, 21 of which are federally designated as hazardous air pollutants. The samples were taken from the territories of Eversource Gas, National Grid, and the former Columbia Gas, who together provide service to 93% of Massachusetts gas customers. However, since 2008, natural gas prices in the US have fallen significantly, and natural gas is now increasingly used as a base and intermediate load power source in many places. Often the choice of heating fuel in new construction has long-term implications, as fuel switching can be expensive. Water heaters, especially, can be scheduled to heat their water at night when power is cheap, or at midday when more solar is on the grid. They can also provide “ancillary services” like frequency regulation to the grid. Third has to do with electricity rates and how they’re structured — whether they are a flat rate or vary with the time of day. I found, in my quest to ditch oil for electricity, virtually no encouragement, help, or guidance from any agency or organization.
Already, retrofitting homes to an all-electric setup is an expensive endeavor. In fact, a recent study by the San Francisco city government found that retrofitting all housing units that now use natural gas would cost between $3.4 billion and $5.9 billion. Expectedly, the costs will fall mainly on residents, with some subsidies from the city.
Building new natural gas infrastructure — especially in states with ambitious carbon targets — risks stranded assets, likely at ratepayer expense. At the very least, states should assess electrification options when they are considering natural gas expansions. Better yet, they should just stop building new natural gas infrastructure, period. In 2021 natural gas has the lowest delivered cost of any energy form at just $12.05 per GJ, lower than electricity ($38.69), propane ($36.72), and heating oil ($31.89).
A furnace was the main type of heating system used by Canadian households in 2011 (57%), followed by electric baseboards (27%) and boilers (5%) . Air pollutants and greenhouse gas emissions are by-products of energy production and consumption which have an impact on the environment. Households may choose to lessen their environmental impact by reducing their energy use, which may also result in lower energy bills. Larger diameter, higher pressure pipelines transmit natural gas from its source to cities and towns. Low pressure service lines then deliver natural gas into homes, businesses and other end-use establishments. But in general, a stove will use about 1,000 to 2,000 BTUs of natural gas per hour of use.
A more historical perspective shows the percentage of new homes built with natural gas for space heating to be between 60 and 70 percent. The residential sector uses natural gas to heat buildings and water, to cook, and to dry clothes. About half of the homes in the United States use natural gas for space heating and water heating. In 2021, the residential sector accounted for about 15% of total U.S. natural gas consumption, and natural gas was the source of about 23% of the U.S. residential sector's total energy consumption. Overall, three-quarters of U.S. homes use two or more energy sources, but mobile homes in all regions of the country and homes in the South are most likely to only use electricity to meet all of their household energy needs. LPG use for grilling food outdoors is common throughout the country, while many homes in rural areas use LPG to meet the majority of heating and cooking needs.
Natural gas comprises almost one-fourth of all primary energy used in the U.S. and is directly linked to jobs and economic health. The natural gas industry supports the employment of nearly 3 million Americans in all 50 states. The very first natural gas fuel cell was installed in a house in Latham, New York in July 1998. The system was plugged into the home’s natural gas line as the fuel supply, and is now completely independent of any outside electricity.
However, advances in heat pump technology, including cold-climate heat pumps, have enabled more efficient electric space heating in areas with lower winter temperatures. In 2015, 1.3 million households in the cold/very cold climate region had electric heat pumps, or about 3% of the regional total. In addition to heating homes, natural gas can also be used to help cool houses throughnatural gas powered air conditioning.

Opening windows and turning on a vent that exhausts to the outside when cooking are simple steps that can lower the risk of indoor exposure. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has the authority to set performance standards for gas stoves and ventilation hoods to limit air pollutant emissions.
A 2009 UCS report indicates that CHP use could more than triple by 2030 if policies are enacted to make steep cuts in carbon emissions . Utilities and public utility commissions often support expansion of the natural gas network. So do states, which still frequently promote switching to natural as the environmentally friendly option. But as the RMI report shows, for new construction homes, electrification is both lower-carbon and lower-cost.
